Meet Meg from True North Farmstead, one of the friendly faces you’ll find at Downingtown and Malvern Farmers Markets! Meg brings fresh, locally made cheese to market each week - and a whole lot of heart behind it! Stop by, say hi, and get to know the people who make your food!
Tell us about yourself and your business.
I'm Megan at True North Farmstead and we make sheep's milk cheeses and yogurts as well as grass fed spring lamb.
This is our third year with Growing Roots Farmers Markets and I am at the Downingtown and Malvern farmers markets.
What do you love most about farmers markets?
So I love being a vendor at Growing Roots or any farmers markets because it really brings me closer to the community.
A lot of the work that we do with farming and cheesemaking is so solitary, which I also love.
But being able to share my products with the local community and get to know our fellow vendors has been a joy.
Tell us how you got started.
My husband and I moved out to Chester County from Philadelphia a little over 10 years ago, and we have never been farmers. We found this small farm that we just fell in love with and we saw so much potential there for something. About six years ago, after the birth of our first child, I decided to stay home from my teaching career. And slowly but surely, the idea of raising sheep on our small pasture and creating sheep's milk cheeses came to life.
We ran into another vendor at the Downingtown farmers market who was doing the exact same thing, Julia at Locust Hollow, and got a small flock of sheep from her that spring and just started down that journey.
It has been incredible, but we have learned so much along the way and grown so much along the way. Not only in farming and in cheesemaking but also in running a business. And that's part of what our name speaks to.
How did you come up with your company name?
So our name True North is the idea that you always have to shift and adjust your position in the world in order to achieve True North. And we've stayed true to that.
We make small shifts each year in our life, and in our farming, to really try to reach the potential that we know our business has, our farm has, and our community and family need.
